Step 1 Keyword Research = Understanding Your Customers
Contrary to what you may be thinking, keyword research is not really about finding words that people are typing into search engines.
It’s more about understanding the thought process of the people in your specific niche; this is known as your target market.
The ultimate goal of doing keyword research is to connect your potential customer with your product or service. You do this by learning and understanding as much as you can about your customers.
If you’re a complete newbie to all this keyword stuff then you may find it difficult to comprehend the importance of this just like I did in my early days of internet marketing, so what you need to do is; slow down and allow a day or two and follow the basic steps laid out below or you will end up back here after putting in countless days possibly weeks of work. Just like I did when I started.
1. Define your target market; Who Is going To Want To Use Your Product
a. What is your product?
b. Pleasure; What are the benefits of your product?
c. Pain; What problems can your product help solve?
2. Understanding Your Target Market
a. What are their interests and fears?
3. What sort of questions are they asking? “Look in forums”
4. How are they explaining their problems?
5. Do they have opinions about existing products and services in this niche?
Take notes on the words the words or phrases they are using to express their interests and problems.
1. Understand Your Competition
2. Seek out and make a list of your competition.
3.How do they attempt to solve your customer’s problems?
4. Can you do a better job than them?
5. Who are the leading competitors & how long have they been in business?
6. Do they use a blog and what do they talk about often?
I can’t emphasize the importance of these steps enough when it comes to building your keyword list, don’t try to rush through, take your time and take notes. “pencil-pad, notepad, word” Just take notes.
Visit as many discussion forums as possible and write down the phrases, words and jargon your prospective customers are using. Understanding the industry related jargon is imperative to targeting your market in more ways than one. “More on that later…but here’s a hint; SEO”
When you have been through all these steps you have your primary keyword list.
(Q: Why don’t we just use a keyword tool to generate our primary keyword list?
(A: Keyword tools are excellent and they are integral part of keyword research but they will only do so much and they won’t tell you what words are being used most often by your target market. Think about it for a minute… You actually have to give a keyword tool a list of keywords to work with and then use it to focus in on the keywords that have the most value.
Once you have been through all the steps above you will have a very solid and commanding primary keyword list. Now is the time to drag out the keyword suggestion tools.
